Long · about 200 words

Justin Jarvinen is the founder of Modven, a strategy and innovation studio in Lake Bluff, Illinois, that works with the old economy: distributors, manufacturers, service businesses, and the private equity firms that own many of them. Modven reads the records a company already keeps, its quotes, invoices, and orders, to find and size the value nobody has priced, then builds the product or workflow that captures it. The method came from studying more than twenty of Justin’s own ventures and innovation projects side by side, and every engagement starts with a ten-day Opportunity ID. Before Modven, Justin led the work that positioned KISS with a new category of buyer, and the band’s IP later sold for more than $300M. He built BCKSTGR, where United MileagePlus members bid miles on experiences money couldn’t buy, a program with United and the City of Chicago that reached $270M in contract value before the company was acquired in 2013. Across 25 years he has founded seven startups, exited two, won more than 60 innovation, technology, and creative awards, and directly contributed to $700M in enterprise value.

Topics

Six conversations Justin has had many times, and enjoys.

01

The margin your sales team is giving away

Pricing leakage hides in invoice lines, one discount at a time. How to find it in records you already keep, size it honestly, and test a fix before building anything.

Owners, operators, distribution and manufacturing audiences

02

Value creation inside the hold

A buyout now needs 10–12% EBITDA growth a year to reach 2.5x. Where that growth hides in the portfolio company’s own data, and how to find it in ten days instead of a hundred.

Sponsors, operating partners, deal audiences

03

Why AI pilots stall, and the ones that pay

Most pilots start with a tool instead of a question. The ones that pay start with a written assumption, a number on it, and a stop condition.

Executives and operators weighing AI

04

Find the value before you sell

A buyer pays for today’s earnings and keeps the upside they find. How owners can capture it first, or make sure it is priced in.

Owners, exit planners, M&A advisors

05

What a rock band taught me about enterprise value

The music business ran on the same model for fifty years. The KISS story, and why industry experts rarely find the value in their own industry.

General business and innovation audiences

06

Old models are where the value hides

In public markets an edge disappears in minutes. Inside a family distributor, nobody is looking, so the gap between assumption and record can grow for thirty years.

Strategy, innovation, and Chicago business audiences

Questions

Good places to start.

  1. What is the most common place you find money hiding in a mid-sized company?
  2. Why write the hunch down before you look at the data?
  3. How did a rock band end up teaching you about enterprise value?
  4. What should a PE operating partner do in the first thirty days after close?
  5. Where does AI actually pay in an old-economy business, and where is it hype?
  6. If you owned a $30M distributor, what would you look at first?
  7. What is the difference between a consultant’s recommendation and something that ships?
