Modven Freight Recovery Calculator

Freight recovery is the share of what you pay to move goods that you bill back to customers. Enter what you paid and what you billed over twelve months, and the calculator shows your recovery rate, the unrecovered cost in dollars and basis points of revenue, how much of your operating profit it consumes, and what closing the gap to a target rate is worth. Use your best branch as the target, since it proves what your market will accept.

How it works

Every number, and where it comes from.

Recovery rate

Freight billed divided by freight paid.

Unrecovered freight

Freight paid minus freight billed, also shown as basis points of revenue.

Share of operating profit

Unrecovered freight divided by EBIT, where EBIT is revenue times your EBIT margin.

Value at target

Freight paid times the target rate, minus what you bill today. Zero if you are already above the target.

Questions

Asked often, answered plainly.

What is a good freight recovery rate?

The best benchmark is your own best branch, customer group, or lane, because it shows what your market already accepts. Research on distributors finds recovery varies widely between branches of the same company16.

What counts as freight paid?

Carrier invoices for outbound, inbound, and drop-ship freight, plus the cost of your own fleet: drivers, fuel, maintenance, and vehicle cost. Leave out anything you cannot tie to moving goods to customers.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
